Of the four main temples which existed in Wuhu, three were destroyed in the Sino-Japanese War and only the Guangji Temple, at the foot of Zhe Hill, remains. It is a famous Buddhist site in Anhui Province
Standing on the southwest foot of Zheshan Hill in the city, Guangji Temple was built during the reign of the Emperor Qian Ning (894-897) of the Tang Dynasty. The main hall is hung with ten scrolls depicting the Buddhist Hell. Emperor Dezong (reigned 780--5) came here as a monk. When omens indicated that this was an unsafe place for him to reside, he went to live on the famous Buddhist mountain of Jiuhua, further south.

At that time, pilgrims on their way to Mount Jiuhua stopped here to pay their tribute first, so the hill became known as Little Mount Jiuhua.
The buildings were erected against the slope in three tiers. The Zheta Pagoda at the rear of the temple is claimed to be one of the eight most beautiful sights in Wuhu.
It is said that a priceless gold seal is stored somewhere inside the temple.
